Dynamic Lego Sculpture - Technic Gears

I recently updated my banner image on my social media sites to a picture that shows a series of Lego Technic gears inter-meshed with each other. Someone asked if the gears actually work in real life, so I built my banner image using real Lego gears and pieces to show that it does, and I learnt a few things along the way. Using the LEGO set 42005 (Monster Truck) as a starting point, I modified it to create a new truck that uses tank treads. Since this truck uses tank treads with rubber attachments it can traverse a wide range of terrains, and it has neutral steering (it can turn on the spot). The t...

      I'm sorry, I made this gearbox about 12 years ago, and I no longer have it put together. If you analyse the video closely, you should be able to see enough information to recreate it yourself. However, I consider this gearbox a failure - when the output is under load, the gears start to grind. You might want to check out this other gearbox that I made: ua-cam.com/video/CBBlflmi41U/v-deo.html

    Just did a little experiment with Lego blocks in (tap) water, found that brown blocks sink while green blocks float. Density of ABS (Lego material) is very close to water.

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden 6 місяців тому

      Interesting. I've always found that most bricks sink in water, however if any air bubbles get caught in the bricks, that is enough to make them float.

      I did create an LDraw file for this GBC module which you can download here: www.brickshelf.com/gallery/slfroden/GBC-To-and-Fro/to-and-fro-gbc-module.mpd This file isn't really building instructions per-se, but it is what I use to rebuild this GBC module and it may help you out. The following forum thread also has information about both the GBC module and the Automatic Motor Shutoff mechanism: www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/143679-gbc-to-and-fro/ I hope that helps.

    I was looking through old videos I liked. I'm pretty sure I saved this one because I didn't understand it the first time. How do you control that first motor so perfectly? it takes a while for them to stop and start moving in the other direction, and this type of lego is mostly analogue. I can see the remote for the motor on the upper left corner. What is controlling the remote? Anyway, it's not one smooth single direction movement. If it would be, the worm gear would just go out of the axle at the top, or bottom. And you can actually hear the motor having to stop and restart all that gearing inside.

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden Рік тому

      At the upper left is the IR receiver, which is controlled by an IR controller/transmitter. I can't remember which one I used, but I think I used the Train IR Controller which lets you control the speed of the motors. The motor in the middle is on all of the time, but as the worm gear goes up it has to struggle against gravity a little bit. The worm gear then turns another gear which is linked to the base which makes it go up half of the time, and down half of the time. The linkage stops the worm gear from sliding off the end of the axle. It looks like it pauses at each end, but that is just because of the rotary-to-linear motion (sin wave). I only turn the motor at the lower left on after a few seconds, and that is so the whole mechanism can rotate so you can get a good look at the mechanism for all sides.

    Isn't it a safety measure to prevent a motor-powered pump to build up too much of a pressure? You know, a motor powered pump keeps going for longer periods of time, and such "safety valve" somewhat stabilises the pressure on a certain level despite the pump going on.

    • @slfroden

      I understand what you are saying, and it is true that the seal around the piston is designed to leak air when the cylinder is over-pressurised, however in this case there was a crack in the plastic which was leaking air. This gearbox can be extended to have more gears, but there is a little bit of play in the mechanism which causes the gears to jump and grind when the outputs are under load. Have you seen my other gearbox which is a better design and can have more gears? ua-cam.com/video/zW07yvEafl4/v-deo.html

    did you say 4-1 is 5? no that just does average and adding you would need more then 5~ numbers to make a subtraction calculator

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden 2 роки тому

      No, I never said that "4-1 is 5". In the video @ 1:12, I start with an example of subtraction being: 5 - 4 = 1. Subtraction is just the reverse of addition, and this device is perfectly capable of doing both, within the given range of numbers. Keep in mind that this is just a proof-of-concept, and if you made the gear racks longer and added more numbers to the scales you could perform a wider range of calculations. You could also extend the scales to include negative numbers, or change them from linear scales to logarithmic scales to perform other types of calculations.

    Great work and data presentation. I wonder at which point the handling of the bricks will begin to show in the measurement? The use of new condition is a good control. It would be great to see this done for the transparent colors, like you mentioned, and other retired colors as well. The sand colors come to mind.

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden 2 роки тому

      Thanks. The weight of used bricks would be interesting as there could be less weight due to scratches and dents, but more weight due to dirt and grime. Unfortunately I don't have enough transparent bricks or bricks in colours that have been retired to be able to do any meaningful tests or analysis. Another interesting test would be to see how the weight of a 2x4 brick has changed as the design of the brick has changed over the years.

    I could see incorporating this into a form of self balancing lift kit for show cars, i would think without the rubber band the weight of the model would apply enough pressure to keep them even. Or a scale, wouldn't give actual weight but would definitely tell you what weighs more.

    How did you build the Modification for the largest Tires

    • @slfroden

      The first step was to extend the axles so that the wheels cleared the bodywork. Then I replaced the axles so that they had suspension springs. This isn't really an instructional video or a tutorial video, it is just trying to show how you can take an existing set and make some modifications to it, and maybe inspire you to do your own modifications to a set, or create you own models from scratch.
